Harvested & Eaten

“Raccolto & Mangiato” (Harvest and Eaten) – Collection and recovery of unsold food, Food education laboratories, Kitchen and urban vegetable garden» is a project for the reconstruction of social ties, the fight against food waste, solidarity and sustainability, mutual care, proximity.

Thanks to the roots of the project in the area, operational partnerships have become established over the years, such as the one with the Coop. Soc. AERIS that manages the Residenza Marsigli, a House of Night Hospitality for homeless people based in Turin, Via Marsigli 12. The objective is to offer an evolutionary context in which the person can rediscover or reinvent new dimensions of himself: the sense of living, the process of emancipation and empowerment, the reconstruction of social ties. In the Residence, innovative integrated projects are experimented: paths of support to autonomy, activating around the person living, working, but also therapeutic or rehabilitation resources.

For about a year and a half, activities related to the feeding of homeless people have been taking place, along the road of food education, the battle against waste, the collection of unsold food and also the acquisition of communicable and socializable culinary skills. The residents of the dormitory participate in the collection of unsold goods with “Bread in the Town Hall” on the Brunelleschi market, and on Sunday they cook together the so-called “union lunch” and during the week they carry out laboratory activities:

With the help of an expert cook in the preparation of “poor foods” a cooking workshop is held for the preparation of meals, which alternates with informative and seminar moments on nutrition and principles of nutrition education – supervised by a dietitian doctor. The laboratory is a place of observation and experimentation for the project participants who may be interested in deepening the culinary field and hypothesize a placement in the workplace. Moreover, it is above all a space for sharing stories, stories, memories and socializing. The prepared foods are consumed by the guests of the Residence, going to supplement their daily diet.

At the beginning of 2018 we created the “Via Marsigli recipe book”!

Complementing the Kitchen Workshop for activity timing, a vegetable garden is set up on the terrace of the Via Marsigli Residence, using mainly recycled and environmentally sustainable materials. The garden is oriented towards the cultivation of seasonal products and aromas, for their use in the kitchen during the workshops and available to guests during the week. We are attentive to the respect of a natural cultivation that can support the laboratory and facilitate its economic sustainability.

In the winter period carpentry activities, small repairs, creative recycling of recycled materials come to life to create new furnishings, decorate spaces, and give life to objects in disuse, leaving space for their manual dexterity and creativity.

The project is implemented with the contribution of the City of Turin – Social Services Department – Social Policies Area – Social Fragility Prevention Service and Support for Difficult Adults.
